Family of a Black teen says their juvenile son was racially profiled while driving through a wealthy neighborhood before he was confronted by two white men who ‘felt the need to hit his car with a cone and throw a rock through his window’
Family of a Black teen says their son was racially profiled while driving through a wealthy neighborhood. In a video, which was taken by the high school student and later shared on social media, the 16-year-old was confronted by a trio of residents who allegedly tossed a rock through his rear driver’s side window and told the teen to leave the neighborhood. In the video, two White men can be seen yelling at the student and closing the distance between themselves and him. “I was racially profiled while driving through my friends neighborhood. They didn’t like the way I was driving, so they felt the need to hit my car with a cone, and throw a rock through my window.” the 16-year-old teen reportedly said.
The 16-year-old student from Fl0rida, later identified as Jermaine Jones, shared a video of a recent experience he had after leaving a friends’ home, NBC News reports. Jones and his family claim he was racially profiled while driving through a wealthy neighborhood on Thursday, June 16.
The high school student initially shared the video on his social media account with the following caption: “I was racially profiled while driving through my friends neighborhood. They didn’t like the way I was driving, so they felt the need to hit my car with a cone, and throw a rock through my window. All I wanted to do was de-escalate until police came, because I wasn’t about to get charges pressed on me for no reason.”
In the video, a white man in glasses can be seen approaching the 16-year-old and saying “burning out and racing through my f—–g neighborhood.” At one point, the Black boy asked, “Who got the gun?” and one of the men can be heard saying, “The guy who’s got a permit to carry, d—–s.” A white woman, who was not identified, can be seen standing and repeatedly yelling: “Get out of this neighborhood.”
According to The Daily Beast, the two white men have been identified and arrested. They were later identified as 52-year-old Donald Corsi. Corsi reportedly threw the rock and is now charged with damage to property and launching a weapon into a vehicle. 61-year-old Howard Hughes is now charged with property damage and a misdemeanor for battery.
Hughes, who was employed by a McDonald’s franchise, is no longer employed by the organization,” local McDonald’s owner and operator James Gilchrist told The Daily Beast.
According to Jones’s sister, Hughes and Corsi reportedly ‘attempted to throw a brick at his head, and missed.’
The victim’s father shared a live video on his Facebook profile. The video shows police arriving on the scene as residents stood outside their homes. The student’s father said that he wanted to go live just so we have evidence, in case something happens to him. “Even when I was coming into this neighborhood, I had a couple yell at me. Black people cannot stay around here.” the father said in the live video.
