Long-term substitute teacher is under investigation by the school district after he bragged about telling his students that Elon Musk’s buyout of social media giant Twitter was the worst thing that could have happened
The high school teacher has been criticized after he reportedly bragged about telling his students that Elon Musk’s buyout of social media giant Twitter was the worst thing that could have happened. His tweet prompted a wave of criticism, with many users explaining that a whole host of social media platforms and media companies are owned by individual billionaires and urging him to keep his political beliefs to himself while in the classroom. The long-term substitute teacher is now under investigation by the school district.
The high school teacher from Rhode Island, Enrique Sanchez, reportedly complained against the founder of Tesla in front of his students, the Daily Mail reports.
Sanchez, who teaches at Central High School, is also running as a leftist candidate to become a Rhode Island State Representative.
The long-term substitute teacher posted on his social media account: “Of course I explained to my students in all five of my classes today why Elon Musk buying off Twitter is the worse thing that could have happened. No individual and especially wealthy elites should be given these types of opportunities to buy off social media platforms.”
His tweet prompted a wave of criticism, with many users explaining that a whole host of social media platforms and media companies are owned by individual billionaires and urging him to keep his political beliefs to himself while in the classroom.
According to Daily Mail, many Twitter users criticized the teacher for allowing his personal political beliefs to interfere with his profession of teaching children.
“@EnriqueForRI needs to keep his political beliefs to himself when he’s teaching. Public education will fall if teachers don’t get back to doing their jobs, which is teaching, not proselytizing.” one user reportedly said.
Another user said that many other media organizations and social media platforms are owned wholly or partially by wealthy individuals.
“Just to be clear: Facebook – owned/controlled by 1 billionaire. WA Post-owned by 1 Billionaire. The Atlantic – Billionaire. Bloomberg News – yep, another billionaire.” a different user said, FOX News reports.
According to reports, Elon Musk claims that his takeover is not motivated by economic reasons, but rather out of a desire to safeguard Twitter as a venue for free speech rather than censorship.
“Having a public platform that is maximally trusted and broadly inclusive is extremely important to the future of civilization. I don’t care about the economics at all.” he reportedly said..
According to ABC News 4, the high school teacher is now under investigation by the school district.
When Sanchez was asked about his comments in class, Sanchez said he does think it was a mistake.
Enrique Sanchez reportedly told ABC News 4: “I think it was a mistake to share that publicly. It’s my job as an educator to work on the curriculum, teach them, but also to give them an opportunity to explore their knowledge. In no way was this trying to promote any side of the political spectrum. Kids actually pushed back against this.
I did post my personal view. I should have gone more into detail with the tweets, explaining that there was support, pushback, curiosity. But I’m aware that when it comes to teaching, when it comes to working in the classroom with youth, our job is to educate our kids on the curriculum, on the topics, not share political opinions.”
