Mother speaks out about son’s addiction battle in obituary so his life wouldn’t have gone in vain
The unfortunate mother has finally broken her silence on her son’s struggles with drug addiction that ultimately led to his death. He died due to a fatal overdose. Hoping to make a difference in the lives of other troubled youths, the mom wrote about the circumstances surrounding the death of her late son in his obituary.
“Hunter Lee Clemons, 22, Florida, passed away Thursday, February 10, 2022, of an overdose after a long battle with addiction,” the mother from Louisiana, Christy Couvillier, wrote according to KLFY. Sharing the young man’s story was extremely important for Hunter’s family so his life wouldn’t have gone in vain.
“His family would like to speak the truth about his death. Silence would mean Hunter’s death was in vain, but if one person’s life is saved by his story, we would tell it a million more times,” read the obituary. “We know the pain of his suffering. We know the pain of our own suffering as his family, and we know there are hundreds of other people here in our community suffering as addicts or as loved ones to them.”
Christy noted that her son “had a heart of gold” and that “anyone from his childhood or adult life could confirm.” She continued, “He was kind, funny, charismatic, selfless, loyal, and always tried to find the positive in any situation.” However, while “doing his best to block out the negatives,” “his addiction came into play.”
“Drugs offered Hunter an escape from his demons he faced throughout his life,” she wrote. “On July 23, 2019, he overdosed on heroin laced with fentanyl and was on life support for four days before he woke up.” Once Hunter was released from the hospital, completed drug rehab and decided to start a new life back in Florida.”
Things seemed to be going great, according to his mother. “He thrived after moving to Florida. He started a job as a valve tech at Flotech, Inc and went fishing every chance he got. He loved spending his days outside on the water or with his roommates,” she added. Per reports, Christy wasn’t aware that her son had started using drugs again days before his death.
On the morning of February 10, the 22-year-old took a pill and was found several hours later by his roommate with his face down on his bed. “Even if you’re just someone who is a social drug user, it just takes one time.
If you’re not gonna stop using, you have got to start testing your drugs and save your life until you are ready to get clean,” the mother said.
“Speaking the truths (no matter the circumstances) surrounding the epidemic of drug use may be the difference between life and death for someone,” she wrote in her son’s obituary emphasizing the importance of awareness surrounding increasing drug abuse among youths. “In honor of Hunter’s life, we ask that truth be spread in regards to this epidemic and awareness be raised,” she shared.
A GoFundMe Page has been created to help the family with funeral expenses.
